New developments in superhard abrasive grinding technology

Time:2023-10-07 Click:34

Abrasives made of diamond or CBN abrasives are called superhard abrasives. Due to its excellent grinding performance, it has been widely used in all aspects of grinding technology, and has become the basis for technological progress such as ultra-precision grinding, grinding, grinding of difficult-to-machine materials, high-precision form grinding, grinding automation and unmanned.
Diamond and CBN abrasives due to their complementarity in the adaptation of processing materials, so that the range of abrasives composed of them can be greatly expanded, covering almost all of the processed materials, including a variety of high hard, high brittle, high strength and toughness materials.
Diamond abrasives are abrasives for grinding hard and brittle materials such as cemented carbide, optical glass, ceramics and adjectives, but because it is easy to carbonize at 700 °C ~ 800 °C, it is not suitable for grinding steel materials and ultra-high-speed grinding. The emergence of CBN abrasives has led to the revolution of grinding technology, which can withstand high temperatures of 1300 °C ~ 1400 °C, chemical inertness to iron group elements, good thermal conductivity, high removal rate when grinding steel, large grinding ratio, long abrasive life, is grinding hardened steel, high speed steel, high strength steel, stainless steel and heat-resistant alloy and other high hardness and toughness metal abrasives. In addition, CBN abrasives are also suitable for ultra-high-speed grinding, and metal matrix CBN abrasives will not break if the line speed exceeds 250m/s.

The widespread use of CBN abrasives is mainly due to the advent of various high-performance CNC grinding machines in recent years, as well as the progress of abrasive manufacturing technology, the development of new abrasives such as single-layer electroplating and high-temperature brazing with excellent performance, which has promoted the development of grinding technology, especially the new process of point grinding is more favored.

Quickpoint Grinding was first introduced by the German company Junker. It is achieved by using brazed CBN thin grinding wheel (width only a few mm) and ultra-high grinding wheel line speed (120m/s~180m/s, high up to 200m/s~250m/s). During machining, the axis of the grinding wheel and the axis of the workpiece form a certain inclination angle in the horizontal direction, so that the theoretical line contact between the grinding wheel and the workpiece becomes point contact. This can greatly reduce the grinding contact area area, and the extremely high grinding speed can not only make the grinding chip thinner, the abrasive load reduced, but also make the heat too late to be transmitted to the workpiece and grinding wheel, the upper sister according to the service is almost taken away by the grinding chip, improve the workpiece processing accuracy and surface quality. The use shows that the grinding ratio of point grinding is large, the grinding wheel life is long, the trimming frequency is low, the material removal rate is high, and because it adopts the same two-coordinate linkage as NC lathe to achieve the surface grinding of complex rotary body parts, a single installation can process all shapes such as outer circles, cones, curved surfaces, threads, shoulders and grooves, which are more flexible than cut into grinding, while the cooling effect is good, the grinding temperature is low, and even dry grinding can be truly realized. At present, the process has been used in the Santana car production line of Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd., China, and has achieved significant economic benefits.
